Luke/Fisher Remodeling 2008
11/1: PODS empty; house full of boxes...
10/29: PODS almost emptied; living room almost full...
10/20: Sconces! Now it is really done. (Click here to see the reconstructed home theater!)
10/15: Shades!
Black-out shades behind wood shades on our 12' wide by 6' high front window

10/14: "Done"!
Really final touch-ups -- still waiting for the sconces, but it's officially done (i.e. paid in full)
10/13:
Final touch-ups, furniture redistribution -- and the outside terrace lights!

10/06-12:
The final floor refinishing! So, while the floor stuff dries, nothing'll be done until we and they can return on 13 Oct.... Meanwhile, we're at a local hotel, where Gem waits with Emma and tries to share her dinner. And the kitties do what cute kitties do, and Emma plays fetch down the length of the micro-suite

10/02:
Trash / recycling bins screen

10/01:
Home theater prep, all of the speakers (except the subs) head back to SVS for newly improved crossovers. The stair handrails are complete -- and exquisite!

09/29-30:
Lots of unphotogenic detaily things, and the 2 wall-mounted handrails -- and the ceiling fan!

09/27:
Color in the living room!

09/26:
We have a door knocker! And as it gets closer to Xmas, on cold foggy nights, we will see in the knocker, without its undergoing any intermediate process of change — not a knocker, but Marley's face. Marley's face. It will not be in impenetrable shadow as the other objects in the yard are, but have a dismal light about it, like a bad lobster in a dark cellar. It will not be angry or ferocious, but look at us as Marley used to look at Scrooge: with ghostly spectacles turned up on its ghostly forehead. The hair will be curiously stirred, as if by breath or hot air; and, though the eyes will be wide open, they will be perfectly motionless. That, and its livid colour, will make it horrible; but its horror will seem to be in spite of the face and beyond its control, rather than a part of its own expression. As we look fixedly at this phenomenon, it will become a knocker again. (Look here!)

09/24-25:
Blue entry & purple middle room -- woohoo! The entry light is together and looks cool, but needs adjustment (it hangs too low)

09/21-23:
Lots of progress with patching and sanding prefatory to painting (nothing photogenic) -- and new front outside lights and almost new entry light (missing setscrews...)

09/15-18:
They made progress everywhere with drywall mud, patching and sanding prefatory to painting (nothing photogenic) -- and fixing the fubar wiring for the front outside lights, which required removing and replacing large wall sections

09/14:
They made progress on the extended soffit and fascia, and continued to paint the shelves

09/13:
Home theater prep: we put 45' rear and 55' surround 10awg speaker cables, with 35' HDMI projector cable, inside a special split cable sleeve to run under the living room floor, installed banana plugs on front (L, R, & C 15' 10awg) speaker cables

09/12:
They finished the front door including the storm door, finished entry tile, building out the soffit and fascia to accommodate the wiring for the sconces in the living room, painting the shelves, the handrails are ready, and Emma likes the new rug....

09/11:
Finished laying the tile, grouted most of it, some progress in the living room....

09/10:
Started laying Volga Blue granite tile in the entry!

09/05+08-09:
Finished the front door hardware, accomplished sundry things not apparent photographically (outside concrete pad, trim, touch-ups, moved bedroom furniture back upstairs so we could sleep in our bed), mostly-installed new French doors in the middle room!

09/04/08:
New front door! (Obviously not finished installing....) Pretty refractions from the setting sunlight through the new front door glass! They also got the wiring ready for the terrace lights, and installed the wall base in the middle room.

09/03/08:
They installed the shoe molding upstairs and finished the 2nd coat of polyurethane on the upstairs floors, stairs, and shoe molding; installed the new wood floor in the middle room; and tore out the wood floor in the entry and put down the cement backer board upon which the granite tiles will be installed.

09/02/08:
They removed the French doors to the porch and moved the furniture from the middle room into the entry, preparing to put down the new wood floor. And they sanded and put down the 1st coat of polyurethane on the upstairs floors and upper stairs! In the evening we put up a no-kitties-upstairs fence so they wouldn't be stuck in the basement overnight -- and now we begin sleeping in the living room.... Even when the door is open, the kitties sometimes hang out in the basement....

08/29/08:
Finished painting Jo's room and the hallway, moved all of Jo's furniture and our bedroom's bookshelves to the living room, preparing to start the upstairs floors on the 2nd (the hide-a-beds are unfolded to make sure they leave room for them to open, since we'll have to sleep down there while the upstairs floors are being refinished) -- and the entry floor tiles arrived!

08/28/08: color!
They painted 1st coats on Jo's room and the hallway -- woohoo!!

08/22+24-25/08:
We moved everything (other than furniture) out of the middle and living rooms (including, sigh, the home theater), put our computer (and Tobi his) and most of the HT speakers and several of the HT components on the back porch, and the rest jam-packed in the basement. They pulled out the rest of the carpeting in the middle room, began preparing and painting Jo's room and the hallway (nothing worth picturing), removed the handrails, and, Hallelujah, tore out that nasty lighting from the living room (of which we could not resist taking a picture in a heap on the driveway).

08/21/08:
The pulled out virtually all of the rest of the carpeting (including the living room and middle room, which we thought would happen in 2 and 4 weeks respectively...), nuked all wall base, removed 3 doors, and installed Tobi's new door.

08/20/08: It begins!
They put a temp-patch on the garage roof (which is all we wanted: the whole structure needs to go ... in a few years...), put a bunch of stuff in there including our new front door, and pulled the carpet out of the upstairs hallway and stairs.

Before: Our PODS, which we half-filled with all of our books and lots of other detritus, leaving room for the couches and some other furniture when the floor refinishing begins.

Out with the nasty old vomit-yellow carpeting!
Refinish the hardwood floors!
Nuke the nasty lighting in the living room!
Install beautiful lighting in the living room, and a beautiful ceiling fan!
Replace the ugly-brown-carpet-on-old-linoleum in the middle room with hardwood floor!
Install new French doors in the middle room!
Replace the hardwood floor in the entry with Volga Blue granite (to match the hearth)!
Paint! (Jo's room, hallway, entry, middle room, living room)
Replace most ceiling lighting fixtures with lovely ones!
Replace the front door and install new outside lights by the front door and on the terrace!
